Article ‘unethical,’ ‘one-sided’

To the Editor,

I must express my sincere disappointment in last week’s Chips (Vol. 130, No. 18) front-page article “Students speak out against caf tray removal.”

As a newspaper journalism professional, I found the article to be one-sided. I think the credibility of using chatter on Facebook as the main source for a news story is questionable and unethical.

As a Luther Dining Services employee, I have seen the extreme food waste in the dish room firsthand. Personally, I find sending untouched, unpeeled fruit through the dishroom as wasteful.

The article would have been much more credible had the author spent a few weeks (during both trayless week and otherwise) working in the dishroom to experience and witness the waste created by Luther students. Also, where are quotes from pro-trayless supporters and full-time caf employees?

Would the newspaper writer care to help weigh food waste on the dock this week?

That is a feature story in itself.

Respectfully submitted,

Lisa Chensvold
