From the editorial board

By: Editorial Board,

In last week’s Chips (Vol. 130, No. 19) we ran a letter to the editor whose writer lambasted Chips for publishing an “unethical” and “one-sided” story on caf tray removal. This letter contained some misleading information.

First of all, the story was not intended to be coverage of the tray removal decision itself, but rather initial student reactions thereto. The Facebook group referenced in the article is, in our view, a visible and legitimate barometer of how students against tray removal feel. Coverage of the experimental trayless week itself can be found in an earlier issue of Chips (Vol. 130, No. 16).

Second, to balance the anti-trayless sentiment of the Facebook group, a caf employee who works in the dishroom was interviewed, as well as student senators who voted in favor of the experimental trayless week. It is true that no full-time cafeteria workers were interviewed, but the focus of the article was student reactions.

Finally, the story contains quotes from Warren Palm and a student senator encouraging the student body to go beyond Facebook posts and engage in constructive dialogue with Palm and Campus Sustainability Intern Caleb Mattison.
