The Student Activities Council-sponsored Friday After Class event that later became Wednesday After Class provided a chance for students to eat, win prizes and look back at the year.
The Friday After Class celebration was originally scheduled for Friday, April 25 but was postponed due to rain. Instead, the event took place on the Library Lawn on Wednesday, April 30.
Sponsored by SAC Special Events, the event was intended to be a celebration for the end of the year that also fit with the year’s SAC theme.
“Because of this year’s SAC theme, we decided to go with a baseball theme ourselves and have a home run derby with root beer floats,” said Sarah Long (‘10), a SAC Special Events co-chair.
The celebration included several gallons of ice cream, two kegs of root beer and an assortment of candy. SAC members organized the home run derby and softball toss with prizes ranging from candy bars to gift cards from iTunes, Subway and The Whippy Dip. Students also created informal activities like Warhead-eating contests and Frisbee.
“There was a mix of people who were planning to come and people who just stopped by,” said Rachel Loeffler-Kemp (‘11), a SAC Special Events co-chair.
Some attendees had planned time to take part in the festivities, while others wandered toward the gathering after finishing music rehearsals, science labs or walking to and from the cafeteria.
“I got done with lab, and it was the perfect thing to walk out here and have a root beer float,” said Chris Ash (‘10).
Students seemed to agree the event would have been more of a success if it had been held on a Friday, as originally planned.
“People probably would’ve stayed and done more of the activities if it was on a weekend,” said Katie Cummings (‘11).
Others were disappointed that the student band Jon, Lars & Tom were unable to play as planned for Friday.
“It’s a shame they didn’t get the live music that was planned for Friday,” said Ash.
The root beer floats were a hit. When the first root beer keg emptied, some students were frustrated, but SAC members pointed to the positive.
“It’s a good sign of how many people we’ve served,” said SAC vice president Jamie McGrath (‘10).
