On Nov. 22, members of the Luther and Decorah communities gathered in the Center for Faith and Life to celebrate the life of Cindy Ballard.
Cindy, 50, who worked as a custodian in Main, died Nov. 13 at her home following a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Cindy will be remembered by her husband and their two children. She also touched many people in her work at Luther, the Decorah farmers’ market and the larger Decorah community.
Campus Pastor Amy Larson spoke about Cindy’s work ethic and the way she devoted her life to helping others.
“It is hard to come together for a memorial for someone who was so vibrant and energetic, so full of love and laughter and life,” said Larson. “And yet, at a time like this, we need to gather to remember Cindy as she was to celebrate the gift that she was to so many.”

Cindy was described as someone who was constantly busy: working, gardening, cooking or doing something to help someone.
“Cindy was always on the go. She was up and at Luther by 4:00 a.m. and she made it so much easier for… so many people in Main to come to work each day,” said Larson. “[Cindy’s] bright smile and infectious laughter helped to get the day off to a good start.”
Cindy will be most remembered for her love of family and taking care of others.
“In all that [Cindy] did with and for her kids, her husband, her family, her business, the farmers’ market and Luther, Cindy was a caretaker,” said Larson. “She gave of herself so fully, showing great care and concern and love.”
